Will People Who Have Never Heard of Jesus Christ Be Saved?

Will people who have never heard of Jesus Christ be saved? This question presents what many consider to be an ethical problem. One might think that the God of the Bible is good and loving, which is true. Thus, they might come to the conclusion that a good and loving God would make an exception for those who had never heard of Jesus. In this article, we will check the veracity of such a belief against the Scripture.

Salvation is Only Through Christ

The basic foundation of our understanding of salvation is built on the source of salvation for all men.  “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6) (emphasis mine). Jesus taught that He was the sole source of salvation for man. When He stated He was the way, that does not allow for multiple paths to heaven. When He said He was the truth, it teaches us by virtue of its singularity that man is not entitled to his own truth. Likewise, when Jesus said “the life,” there is no hope of eternal life outside of Jesus. Jesus taught that He is the only way to the Father. All who will be saved will have to go through Jesus.

Another passage also teaches us with similar words this truth. “And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)(emphasis mine). The inspired Apostle taught the same singularity of the location of salvation in Jesus. There are a variety of beliefs in this world. Some claim to worship the God of Heaven (i.e. Jews and Muslims). However, some varieties of Jews acknowledge Him as a prophet, or others that He was a mere insurrectionist killed by the Romans for His crimes. The Muslim believes that Jesus is not the son of God but a mere prophet, of secondary value to Mohammed. Both would agree that Jesus is not part of the Godhead or the Messiah, the source of salvation.  The Bible, as presented above and below, teaches Jesus as the sole source of salvation, the Messiah, and the only name by which man is saved.

If Salvation is Only Through Christ, What About Those Who Never Hear of Jesus?

The reasoning behind such a question is noble in the case of some. In fact, this might be a question that the child of God wonders about. Perhaps more than ever, we are aware of people groups in remote places that have little to no outside contact with the world. Some that might still be considered to us as undiscovered peoples in some remote area of the Amazon. Some are even so violent that outsiders cannot set foot on the island without either lethal force being employed by such a tribe, or even by jail time if caught by the government that “rules’ over such an area. For example, there is such a group in the Bay of Bengal in India.

North Sentinel Island is home to one of the few remaining primitive tribes on Earth—hunter-gatherer tribes which have had little or no contact with modern civilization. The Indian government, which oversees the Andaman Islands territory, prohibits visitors of any kind, and the islanders themselves violently rebuff any attempts at contact.

I find it troubling that such a group exists and that when we read the Bible, we cannot help but understand that Jesus is a compassionate savior who wishes all to be saved (cf. 2 Pet 3:9). He is one who bore our iniquities, and by His wounds we are healed (cf. Isaiah 53). Jesus express purpose in coming to this earth was described in His own words, “For the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). One might conclude God would have to save those who had never heard that Jesus came to save mankind from sin.

How should we answer this very important inquiry? First, man is without excuse. This is the conclusion of Romans 2:1 after all that precedes it in Romans 1:18ff. In that passage, we learn that man is given over to many things because he has replaced the need for God in his life with many idols. Yet, he is without excuse.

By living in God’s world, a man, even primitive in mind, is forced to reason that the mere existence of creation demands a creator. Thus, the search for the Creator is placed in the heart of man, and He can be found in the Gospel of Christ alone. All men of accountability are amenable to the Law of Christ, and are not saved without obedience to the Gospel. God’s Word teaches that all sinners are without excuse because the evidence that prompts search is present for all people. One might say that Romans 1 does not apply to people who have no access to the message of salvation. The text teaches that hindering the truth in their unrighteousness, the invisible things of Him are seen in creation, and they are without excuse. If one keeps reading in Romans you would find that all accountable men have sinned (cf. Rom 3:23) and the penalty for that sin is death without accepting the gift of eternal life (cf. Rom 6:23).

All men who deny God are given to replace the worship of God with idols.  God is just to judge them for their sin. One is lost not merely for lack of the message of the Gospel; he is lost because he is guilty of sin.  The Spirit also says, “What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion” (Rom 9:14-15). We were created in the image of God and with the innate desire to worship Him.  This includes those living in Islamic countries, Communist countries, or any other place where the Gospel is not as prominent.

If Jesus is the Only Source of Salvation, Then no Exceptions can Exist

We must also conclude that there is a central truth that is undeniable about God. He is not a respecter of persons (cf Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9). God has one plan for salvation, and there are no exceptions to the pattern of salvation. There will be no second chances, not for the deceased, not for faithless Jews, and not for the undiscovered. Saving faith will only come via hearing and obeying the Word of Christ (cf. Romans 10:17; John 14:15). In Acts 10, Cornelius was a good man but lost and needed to hear the Gospel of Christ and obey it through the means of a preacher (cf. Rom 10:14-15). Yes, salvation is found in the singular location, the body of Christ. It is written, “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all” (Eph 4:4-6). There are none able to be saved outside of Christ.

When we consider such a great consequence, what should the child of God do? Teach the truth to as many as we can! Share the message of the Gospel via the means that we have available. Have you considered how many sound brotherhood sources are on the internet that can reach countries around the world? This small website has reached thousands of people in dozens of countries around the world.  Support the work of the church locally and missions worldwide. There are lost people in the world who are without excuse. God has put Christians in the world to teach the Gospel to the lost. We need to be prepared to reduce that number by our commitment to Christ.
